Introduction

Though you often hear (here) that Holi is a northern Indian holiday, it appears to be celebrated throughout the country. And why not: it's one of the most fun festivals I've ever experienced, essentially a license to play like a 10 year old again. Who wouldn't want to do that?!

The festival celebrates the coming of spring, and "playing colours" is apparently associated with the colours of spring, at least in one telling of it. For others, it's just a celebration of happiness, a time when you cannot be angry with anyone, and the bright dry and liquid dyes spread generously over everyone, friend and stranger, is met and given with a big smile and wishes of "Happy Holi!".
