> Chandigarh's Rock Garden

Mr. Nek Chand was a Chandigarh Public Works employee when in 1965 he started building small garden sculptures from various bits of broken pottery, plates, bangles, pebbles, coloured wire and any other detritus he could find. By the time public authorities discovered his 'art' in 1973, it covered an area of 12 acres, not all of it his. Rather than remove the illegal encroachment, the municipal government gave him a salary and 50 labourers to expand and maintain the site as a public attraction. It now covers 25 acres and houses thousands of sculptures and vast amounts of concrete. A quirky, make-you-smile kind of place.
