> Udaipur

Udaipur was the capital city of the princely state of Mewar, in southern Rajasthan. It takes pride in being the only one of the seven Rajput states never to fall/marry/compromise to Mughal domination, though it's apparent from the stunning architecture of the city that the Mughals definitely had some aesthetic influence. And Udaipur is the better for it, in my mind. If there was ever a 'Norman Rockwell' Indian city - the one that, at a glance, just seems so quintessentially typical of the exotic vision first time visitors have of India, or hope to see in India, it's Udaipur.
